When recording animals born, you may identify those animals which gave birth to the progeny. You specify the animals which gave birth by either:
1. Ticking them in the Animal Panel, either before selecting the Births transaction activity, or while editing the Births transaction activity; or
2. Selecting the Dam in the Birth activity form.
There is a very important difference between these two methods. Only the second method, selecting the Dam, creates genealogy records.
Tick an Animal in the Animal Panel
When entering Births, you tick an animal in the Animal Panel to record that the animal gave birth, without identifying the actual animal which was born. The ticked animal has a new "Birth" activity added to its records, but the resulting progeny is not identified. The progeny record is created with a "Born" activity recorded, but the Born activity does not identify its Dam.
Use this method where you cannot, or have no need to, pair up animals with their progeny.
Select the Dam in the Birth Activity Form
Selecting the Dam in the Births activity form records that the animal gave birth and identifies the actual animal/s which were born. The Dam has a new "Birth" activity added to its records, and the Birth activity shows which animal was born. The resulting progeny animal is created with a "Born" activity recorded, and the Born activity identifies its Dam.
Note that when you select the Dam, the animal is also automatically ticked in the Animal Panel.
